چکیده

Abstract. The multi-scale interaction among the tearing mode and the drift wave is investigated using reduced MHD model including the electron viscosity. It is newly found that the fluctuating bootstrap current in the Ohm’s law gives rise to a new instability for the regime where the tearing mode is stable. The stability depends on the dissipations and kinetic effects. This result implies that for some parameter regime where Δ’ is negative, the seed island may not be needed to drive the neoclassical tearing mode. The nonlinear simulations with multihelicity modes are performed for the q profile where the (2,1) tearing modes is unstable and for the optimized q profile where all tearing modes are stable. These results are compared with each other.

Multi-scale Interaction between MHD, Turbulence and Transport in Tokamak Plasmas

The recent achievement in the simulation study of multi-scale interaction among MHD, turbulence and transport is reported. Firstly, we discuss the formation and collapse of Internal Transport Barrier (ITB) in Tokamaks. The meso-scale structures are generated by three-wave interaction among drift wave turbulence. These structures interact each other, which generate the global mode around barrier...

Multiscale interaction of a tearing mode with drift wave turbulence: A minimal self-consistent model

A minimal self-consistent model of the multiscale interaction of a tearing mode with drift wave turbulence is presented. A tearing instability in a cylindrical plasma interacting with electrostatic drift waves is considered, for reasons of simplicity. Wave kinetics and adiabatic theory are used to treat the feedback of tearing mode flows on the drift waves via shearing and radial advection. The...

Laboratory studies of drift waves: Non-linear mode interaction and structure formation in turbulence

Coherent drift modes and drift wave turbulence is studied in a collisionality dominated high-density helicon plasma. The drift wave instability is identified by comparison of the drift mode density fluctuations characteristics with a linear dispersion relation, which reproduces the experimentally observed bent eigenmode structures due to radial gradients of the collisionality profile. Special a...

On the interplay between neoclassical tearing modes and nonlocal transport in toroidal plasmas

This Letter presents the first observation on the interplay between nonlocal transport and neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) during transient nonlocal heat transport events in the HL-2A tokamak. The nonlocality is triggered by edge cooling and large-scale, inward propagating avalanches. These lead to a locally enhanced pressure gradient at the q = 3/2 (or 2/1) rational surface and hence the ons...

Lower-Hybrid-Drift Wave Turbulence in the Distant Magnetotail

Recent satellite observations of electrostatic and magnetic noise in the distant magnetotail (Gurnett et al., 1976) can be explained by the excitation of the lower-hybrid-drift instability. In particular, it is shown that (1) existence conditions for the lower-hybrid-drift instability can be met, (2) the observed frequency spectra and polarization are in good agreement with the predictions of l...
